This unit contained two recorded ESL lessons of the same language point, to the same class, in order to highlight the differences in effectiveness between the two teaching styles. In this exercise, most of the previously learned approaches, methods and considerations were triggered in the comparison, such as the teacher's attitude towards the students, prompting rather than commanding, and lesson planning. The first video showed an ineffective way to teach the language point (modal auxiliary verbs), while the second video showed the same language point taught effectively. The differences in class participation really brought home the importance of properly planned Engage and Activate phases, as the students in the first video were not encouraged, or even dissuaded, from producing language themselves.
