Unit 11 focuses on receptive skills, reading and listening. There are different reasons for both; we might listen to directions or to a joke told by a friend. We might read for pleasure or to gain knowledge. In order to teach receptive skills the teacher may have to pre-teach some vocabulary, so the class understands the basics of the class. Texts should be chosen carefully and level or age appropriate. The teacher must create interest in the topic (engage phase) and be sure that over the course at all of the students find an interest in at least some of the texts provided. A very good example was provided with the Elvis Presley class. Engage with a famous song. Start the Study phase with pre-teaching vocabulary. Engage with other songs and students writing bios of other famous people.
