Choosing a textbook, or even whether or not to use one, can be an important and difficult decision. While some schools may provide a textbook or curriculum, others may not, and then the onus is on the teacher to decide what the best material may be. A teacher with less experience may be more likely to decide on a textbook than a teacher who has been teaching for many years and has a wealth of experience and activities they can call upon.
While using a textbook has some advantages, is important that it does not dominate and become the only resource. Overuse of a textbook can lead to bored students and ineffective teaching.
Therefore, should a teacher use a textbook, it is important that they balance textbook use with other learning activities or exercises.
