This unit has emphasized the importance of evaluating students. The word 'test' is often associated with grading and causes fear or anxiety in many students. However, there are many different types of tests and therefore different purposes. A placement test is used to determine the student's level of the language which allows the teacher or school to place the student in the correct class. Similar to placement tests are diagnostic tests. They are given prior to the start of a class to help the teacher understand how much the students already know and to tailor the course accordingly. Progress tests are used to evaluate the progress of the students throughout the class or semester to see how much knowledge has been learned. There are practice tests which are usually taken before an exam to help students prepare for the test and show that what is expected.
