Two receptive skill, equally as important as each other are: reading and listening. Reading and listening is done for two reasons, entertainment and a specific purpose. The sub skills to teach when teaching reading and listening are: detailed reading, scanning, skimming, deduction and prediction. To avoid problems in a reading/listening lesson: pre-teach difficult vocabulary/grammar, select texts carefully, choose topic thoughtfully, generate interest among student before you start. Authentic texts are not designed for language learning where as non-authentic texts are. A good reading/listening task should be realistically achievable. Not too easy, not too hard. The activate stage usually involves games. Games should have: rules, a teaching point and be fun.
