In this lesson, I learned that there are receptive skills (listening and reading) and productive skills (writing and speaking), that all are important and all should feature in a lesson. A learner may have different motivations for reading, including reading for enjoyment or for a purpose. Both listening and reading require predictive skills, skimming and scanning skills, reading between the lines and reading for detailed information. While reading a text can be repeated until it is comprehended, but students may struggle with long sentences and unfamiliar vocabulary. Listening often happens only once, which doesn't allow time for learners to think. Pre-teaching vocabulary and selecting the right texts for learners can help learners with language difficulty.
