Connecting the first language of a student to the new language is as much training their brain to think in a new pattern as being patient with the student himself. The techniques listed help provide avenues to teach as well as involve the student -- understanding the different stages of the brain's acquisition of new material is helpful. I've learned when to correct the student versus when to allow them to work it out as they acquire the new material. I can remember how difficult it was to learn a foreign language for myself when my teacher would merely provide material without having me critically think about it - these techniques engage students, and will certainly be helpful with younger students who have a difficult time paying attention.
