I learned that there are many ways to write in past tense. I did not know there were four ways to write in the past in regards to time and their meaning. Some verbs in the English language are irregular and do not simply have the ED added to the end of it. The irregular verbs simply must be memorized due to the fact there are no rules regarding the change in spelling for those words. I find it challenging to identify whether the tense is past simple, past continuous, past perfect, or past perfect continuous. When I was in school, I just needed to know the order of the words. The teaching never really covered what they were called and how the tenses were related to time and how they have different meanings regarding time.
