This unit described the types of tests used to gauge and keep track of student' s language skills. A placement test is generally administered to students prior to the start of class in order to accurately group students based on their knowledge of a language. Progress tests, which I would think are the testing type that most students are familiar with, are used more frequently than placement tests. As the name suggests, their purpose is to give the teacher a good idea of the progress that is being made among students. Sometimes students will be required or may want to opt into taking an external examination which is usually not done at the school. These external exams can be intimidating. However, practice tests that reinforce skills that will need to be put into use on the real tests can be very helpful in preparing students for these types of exams.
