This unit dealt with teaching pronunciation and phonology to ESL students. Firstly, I have to disagree with the opening paragraph of this unit booklet! I think that, in my teaching experience especially, pronunciation is not the most neglected aspect of English language teaching as it is something I quite regularly work with my students on to try and improve their overall natural pronunciation of this difficult language. However, I can understand this statement; in my whole educational career and experience (from studying to now teaching) I have never come across the Phonemic alphabet in native speaking classrooms (in my case ? the UK). This unit is one of the first instances where I have studied this difficult, but significantly helpful, teaching aid and I will definitely adopt this into my future phonetics-based classroom activities. I also found the different terminology regarding the Places of Articulation and the Manners of Articulation; for example, Palatal-alveolar and Glottal, and Plosive and Affricate, respectively.
