This unit focuses on the reading and listening skills of students. Both skills are equally important, as they are receptive skills. People read for different reasons: predictive reading is used, for example, when guessing the content from a headline; scanning is used when reading through content to find something specific that you are interested in; skimming is used when you just need to understand the gist of the topic; detailed reading is done when you need to have a deeper understanding of the content; deduction is used to deduce meaning in content that may not be literal. Having reading material available helps students to better capture the content, whereas only listening would prove more difficult for students to retain information. The more interesting the topic, the more motivated and engaged the students will be too. When content is a bit more difficult, it is a good idea for teachers to pre-teach by explaining the content in easier to understand terms, and then to provide reading content to fortify what has been discussed.
