This unit provided an overview of the language teaching methodologies. I appreciated the video lesson including some of the historical context for these strategies. It was interesting to see how the various education theories from different time periods influenced language instruction. I realized that much of my language training has been in a lexical approach, with the aim that learning vocabulary, phrases and sentences will get you using words quickly. But its often hard to apply what you know in different contexts or where the sentences don't match what you already know. My primary work has involved using Drama as a tool to teach language, and has aligned more closely with Communicative Language Training. The focus is on activating usage through on your feet story dramas, narrative pantomimes, or improvisation. The focus is more on fluency than accuracy end of the spectrum. While I think this is a great tool, I recognize that in a more traditional language learning environment, I prepare to lead exercises that focus on the accuracy of language as well.
