Listening and reading are equally language skills that a student must learn together with productive skills: speaking and writing. A well-developed ESA based lesson plan (either straight arrow, boomerang, or patchwork) should entail clear learning objective and language point to learn introduced at the start of the lesson The engagement stage should have an interesting exercise with stimulates learning interest among the students. The study stage should pre-teach vocabulary of key words in the listening narrative or written text (which should be non-authentic for easier comprehension by the students, a listening or reading session, and comprehension exercise of the reading. The activation stage should be linked to the study stage and have the student reinforce his learning of the language skill through a creative and not so challenging exercise.
