Classroom management is extremely important in maintaining discipline and accomplishing the objectives of the lesson. The teacher should pay attention to groupings and seating arrangement in order to maintain cohesion and encourage participation in the lesson. For example, pair work grouping increases student talk time but students may end up paired with students whom they dislike. The grouping and seating arrangement chosen depends on how much the teacher is able to adapt to changing situations in the classroom. Overall, the teacher should use eye contact, gesture and voice to maintain control of the class, while at the same time aiming to establish rapport with the students. Teachers who are able to establish rapport are better able to gain the respect of the students, maintain discipline, and encourage greater participation by the students in the lesson.
