The most important thing I learned in this unit was that in a typical ESl classroom textbooks should only be used as a guide in order to explore deeper topics or ideas in class. Teachers should use a coursebook or textbook as it provides a basis upon which to expand, but they should also be very aware of the individual needs of any one particular group of students and be able to change or add materials according to this.
Teachers should use both authentic materials (genuine English language artifacts such as menus, newspapers and magazines) and created materials (wordsearches, gap-fill excercises, basically any materials created by the teacher specifically related to the lesson content) in order to create a varied and interesting range of study materials for students.
