I have learned that present simple is used when giving directions and instructions, that it is used when commentary is made for example during a sports match, it is also used when reading about historical sequences of events. Not only for frequent activities, habitual events or facts. I have also learned that present progressive is used when giving background information while telling a story, as well as describing events that are developing. I was aware that it was used with actions that are happening at the moment of speaking and actions that are temporary. The use of present perfect is for actions that have started in the past and have ended, when you are wanting to talk about an action that is completed but not to focus on when it was completed. We also use present perfect when we want to talk about how many times something has happened over a period, referring up until the moment of speaking. While using this tense it is common to use for, since, been and gone. For is used for periods of time and since is used when there is a specific date or reference. When you say I have been to France it is talking about a complete trip. If you say she has gone to the store, it is that she has not returned from the store yet. Present perfect continuous can be used when you are talking about an action that began in the past and is still continuing in the future, or it can be when an action has been terminated, but has a result in the present.
