While teaching the building blocks of language: grammar, vocabulary and function, it is most important that students be exposed to the new language, understand its meaning, its construction and how to produce it for practice. Most often, a lesson will focus on just one of these three main areas. Grammar and vocabulary focused lessons will typically use a 'straight arrow' ESA format, while function lessons will be best approached with a 'boomerang' or 'patchwork' EST structure. New vocabulary words taught should be frequently used and appropriate to the students and the task at hand. It is important to teach the meaning, spelling, pronunciation and usage of each new word. It is generally clearer when to teach which grammatical structures based on the level of the students. Students will need to learn the meaning, use and forms and patterns of these structures. Language functions, for example, inviting, agreeing, refusing and suggesting, will be best taught with a focus on the activate stage, such as role-play.
