This unit is about the receptive skills that are reading and listening. Mainly reading and listening can be for purpose or for entertainment or the mix of two. For purpose is the type of reading and listening which helps us to achieve some particular aim or goal. While for entertainment is for joy or pleasure. There are different types of reading and listening skills employed by the people such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information or deduction from context. Pre-teaching difficult vocabulary prior to reading/listening and careful selection of texts by teachers can help students build their confidence with receptive skills. While teaching, the teacher should choose variety of topics over a period of time to cater for all interests. The teacher should create interest in students for reading and listening by showing pictures, predicting about text and other engage phase activities. The comprehension tasks like jigsaw reading or jumbled texts done in pairs or groups will promote more understanding to students as opposed to tasks that just check their understanding.
