English native speakers will not stop once to realize the difference in present tenses nor will they need to think about the usage. It naturally comes out at the right time and context. This is not the case for English learners, where they will need an in depth study of the four different present tenses. Drilling the usage and forms of the present tenses is one objective, however, teachers need to realize the origin of student errors. A student might confuse one present tense with another or incorrectly use a tense. After learning a new tense, it is important for students to practice with activities. Before introducing another tense, it would help to make sure the students have a complete understanding. This will help minimize the repetition of common errors.
