Modal auxiliary verbs, also known as helping verbs. It can control not only the meaning of a sentence but they can also control the power of that sentence too. The modal auxiliary verbs include can, could, may might, must, ought, shall, should, will an would. Modal auxiliary verbs are used to express functions such as: 1) Advise - You must go and see this film. 2) Ability - When I was younger I could run fast. 3) Obligation - I really must get some exercise. 4) Permission - Can I use your Phone please? 5) Prohibition - You mustn't smoke in hospital. 6) Possibility - Smoking can cause Lung Cancer. 7) Probability - It may rain tomorrow! 8) Request - Could you help me? The are two voices in English, which are active and passive forms. It is also known as transitive verbs. The passive forms are made up of auxiliary verb 'be' + past particle. The object of an active sentence appears as the subject of a sentence in the passive voice. Example: Active Voice - The hunter killed the lion. Passive Voice - The lion was killed by the hunter.
