This unit is about the rhythm, stresses and sounds of individual words and within a sentence. This is an area that native English speakers often don't think about when speaking therefore it is also often forgotten to be taught to non native English speakers. When speaking, a sentence can have a very different meaning depending which word you stress within the sentence. For example, lets take the sentence 'he didn't mean to text you.' If the stress was on the first word 'he' the speaker is saying someone else meant to or if the stress was on the word 'you' this means that the speaker is implying that he meant to text someone else. When reading in English it is very difficult for non native speakers to know how to pronounce a new word for they English language has many words that are slept the same way yet pronounced differently such as 'wind' and 'mind'. Therefore when teaching pronunciation it can be useful to use the phonetic spelling of a word, meaning both the teacher and the student need to clear on the phonetic alphabet.
