Receptive skills is one of the two major skills in learning language. This skill covers reading and listening. Reading and listening involves much more than eyes and ears but also involves context and preexisting knowledge. When reading or listening, multiple skills are employed to establish meaning. Predictive skills help us predict the content, Scanning helps us find specific info, Skimming allows us to quickly capture the general idea, Detailed information skills let us know every exact detail, and Deduction based off context help us deduce meaning.
As previously taught, maintaining interest in teaching facilitates better learning. This is especially true when teaching receptive skills. Being mindful of the topic and texts selected so that students can also be interested is crucial. To help aid learning, pre-teaching some difficult vocab can help students through tougher material. Knowing your students on what they like and dislike will help you find what topics to pick when teaching receptive skills.
