I learned several things in this unit. One is that present simple and present continuous can be used as a future tense. Although in my speech I use it this way frequently, I never thought about the fact that I was doing so. It's important to notice things like this so that I can accurately explain the uses of the tenses in spoken English to my students. Another interesting fact is the difference between the \"going to\" future tense and the future simple tense. I had always assumed that their use was the same, and that \"be going to\" was simply a more modern, colloquial way of saying \"will\". Now I know that there are several differences, including the following: \"going to\" future is used when predicting based on present evidence, whereas future simple is used when predicting with no evidence; \"going to\" future is used when making plans before speaking, whereas future simple when making plans spontaneously. There are some other differences that I will be continuing to study.
