This introductory unit outlines the objectives of the course (i.e. to teach methodologies and study ideas related to the teaching of business English) and the contents of each unit. It then outlined a number of acronyms that are commonly used in business English and teaching in general (for example, DipBPE stands for Diploma in Business and Professional English Language Teaching). The unit highlighted the fact that English is the global language of business and trade, which means that many staff members of companies require English language training, which may result in a rapid growth of this industry and potentially lucrative job opportunities. The unit then provided a definition of ESP (English for Academic Purposes), for example, English for medical personnel, but specific training in the area you are teaching is not essential. The unit then detailed the various formats for teaching, for example one-to-one, teaching â€˜in-houseâ€™ or teaching at a language school.
