This unit has confirmed just how complex the English language is and has led me to reflect on how unapproachable all of these rules may seem to someone who is just learning the English language. As someone who has taken many foreign language courses as a student, I am well aware of the seeming impossibility and discouragement that comes in the face of so many grammar rules and exceptions. Besides all the helpful refreshers on grammar that I don’t necessarily think about as a native English speaker myself, I think the biggest takeaway for me here is the encouragement that these rules become easier with practice and when taken one at a time. Yes, it often will be overwhelming for the student (it’s even overwhelming for the teacher at times!) but remembering those feelings of confusion when I was a student learning Japanese or Spanish, I see the need to take and absorb these rules piece by piece.
