In Unit 18, modal verbs, phrasal verbs, passive voice and relative clauses were discussed. Modal verbs, such as may, might, must, could, would, should are used before other verbs to express such ideas like need, obligation, polite requests, certainty or uncertainty, or ability. There are three types of phrasal verbs; Intrasitive, Transitive Separable and Transitive Inseparable. There are two voices used in English; active and passive. In passive voice form, the noun or noun phrase that would be the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. A relative clause is a dependent clause that modifies a noun. There are two types of relative clauses; defining and non-defining. In a defining relative clause, the information given in the sentence is essential to the meaning. In a non-defining relative clause, information can be taken out without changing the meaning of the sentence.
