This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I believe teaching pronunciation and basic knowledge of phonology is of great importance in English-teaching. One of the basic purpose of learn to speak a language is to communicate with others. However, I don't think phonetic alphabet should be taught to young kids without little English-speaking experience because there are abstract symbols which is too difficult for students to understand. Besides, I think pronunciation should be taught in every lesson, and one of the most efficient way is to have the kids to observe how their teachers pronounce each word, and try to imitate. Imitation is also a good way to practise intonation and stress. Now video and audio materials are commonly used, which offers students a good chance to practise intonation as well as stress. Once a student has develop the habit to neglect these, it would be a huge challenge for them to change it in the future.
