This unit discusses the four basic skills in any language. Receptive skills that include reading and listening; as well as the productive skills that include speaking and writing. All are important. This unit focuses on reading and listening. We listen and read for a reason and motive. We listen and read for a purpose and for entertainment. It then goes on to explain how we use prior knowledge as a form to gain true understanding. There exists various skills used to read or listen; predictive skills, specific information scanning, general idea skimming, and reading for detailed information. As a teacher one must choose topics that will help to motivate students and create interest. Tasks assigned should be geared for comprehension of text. And when planning a lesson all of these concepts need to be taking into consideration and incorporated to form a successful lesson.
