These two examples pointed out the extreme difference that attitude of the teacher can make. I have had teachers who exhibited the first video behavior in the class, and got nothing out of it. Honestly I wanted to slap the teacher in the first video. :) In contrast the second lesson was well planned and executed. Just showing interest in the students by learning their names helped them to open up and actively participate, even when they were shy to do so.It's important to teach students receptive skills as well as productive skills. The receptive skills will be needed for a variety of reasons and depending on which, will depend on how a topic/lesson is taught. For example, some context may need to be taught, or key words before a lesson is delivered. It's therefore important that a variety of texts are used to create interest and for variety, but also because of the range of needs for reading and listening.
