Knowing how to manage a classroom, and knowing alternative ways to work out solutions to problems with building rapport, is extremely useful. Breaking down the pros and cons of each kind of grouping and seating, and why using a varied mix of all of them helps keep the class interesting and the students engaged. I especially liked the section on the importance of STT and how to encourage it, versus TTT and how to avoid it unless it's absolutely necessary. One of the biggest problems in an ESL classroom, especially in Asia, tends to be the amount of TTT being used. The shyer and quieter the students are, the more the teacher tries to fill in the silence with TTT that's actually harmful towards building rapport and confidence in students. Listing out just when to use it and how to build student-to-student rapport to increase STT was an immensely useful part of this Unit.
