The receptive skills are listening and reading. There are two types of material to use: authenthic (not specifically made for language learning purposes) and non-authentic (made for the purpose of learning language). The topic of the material should be interesting for, at least some of the, students. Over time a variety of topics should be covered in order to keep it interesting for all students. The engage stage is very important. The students must have some interest in reading or listening to the text. In order not to demotivate the students and to make sure they can perform the task pre-teaching of words can be done. Pre-teaching can be applied to teaching other things as well, anything that needs some prior knowledge before getting to the actual focus point. There should be a balance between pre-teaching as much as necessary and not giving away too much already.
