The easy or difficulty of a vocab item depends on the similarity to the native language, similarity to English words already known, spelling, pronunciation, and appropriacy. What vocabulary you select depends on the appropriacy to the students and task, frequency and coverage, and teachability. Regarding vocabulary items, students need to know the meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling, and pronunciation. What grammatical structures you teach is largely determined by the level of the class and the course syllabus. Students need to be taught the meaning, use, forms, patterns, and any differences between written and spoken forms. When teaching language function, such as inviting/refusing, agreeing/disagreeing, suggesting, etc., you need to cover appropriacy, formality, and technicality.
