Unit nine addresses the importance of properly planning a lesson before teaching it. Lesson planning serves several purposes. One purpose is to lay out the teacher's goals for both him or her, and the students. Another is to provide a sort of to-do list for pre-lesson preparation. By listing required materials, the teacher can avoid problems caused by carelessness or forgetfulness; and by anticipating potential problems, the teacher can think of solutions preemptively. Additionally, a lesson plan serves as a timeline for activities, and thereby helps to keep proper pacing, and it provides a record of what was taught, and what activities were utilized. One thing I've learned is that a lesson plan has to be flexible. If the teacher plots out every minute of the lesson, they may find themselves unable to make on-the-fly adjustments if things do not go as planned.
