Unit 11 covers the receptive skills of reading and writing, detailing the varying ways in which, and purposes for which, we use these skills. The unit also explains typical problems associated with listening and reading and ways teachers can combat those problems so that students will be able to understand the content while also remaining interested and challenged. From this unit the biggest takeaway I have is about how careful and purposive I need to be when selecting reading and listening material. Before making a selection, I should be attuned to what the students are most interested in and should be aware of what their level of English is so that I can create a lesson that will be understandable but that will also allow them to develop the skill of ascertaining the meaning of unknown words from the context and meaning of the passage around those words.
