This unit focuses on teaching receptive skills: reading and listening. It explains how readers and listeners use special skills when reading and listening: these include scanning, skimming, predicting, deducting from the context and understanding detailed information. The unit then moves on to the problems that may be encountered when teaching these skills and how they can be overcome: things to consider when planning a reading or listening lessons are the language that is used (i.e. the presence of long or unfamiliar words, long sentences), the topics that are covered during lesson and how the comprehension tasks should be structured. Also, how to create and maintain interest is an important issue that is considered. Once again, the ESA lesson example is extremely helpful in order to properly understand and absorb the concepts expressed in this unit.
