This unit was a good overview of the advantages and disadvantages of using a course book. Where I work as a teacher, it is likely that I will have to use a course book, so it was useful to know the precautions to take in order to avoid some of the disadvantages of the course book. Firstly, it is important to not feel obligated to use all of the course book material, and that if supplementary material is needed, then it's OK to provide that for the students. The course books that I have worked with tend to put little emphasis on speaking and writing, so it is important in these cases to provide ways for students to practice this. Also, only using the course book for an entire class is a bad idea, as it can be very boring and prevents me as a teacher from thinking outside the box and coming up with solutions to problems the book might not address.
