Unit 13 covered teaching Pronunciation and Phonology. Pronunciation is a neglected part of English Language teaching. Phonology is the study of the physical properties of sounds. Intonation is the variation of volume and pitch in a whole sentence. Techniques for indicating and teaching intonation include nonsense words, by gesture, humming or singing, and the board. The stressed part of a sentence is the strong word of the sentence. Stress can occur on the first syllable, on the last syllable, on the penultimate syllable, and on the ante-penultimate syllable. Four major ways of joining sounds together in English are Linking, Sound Dropping, Sound Changing, and Extra Lettering. Linked Speech is the way that native speakers of English naturally speak. The unit also introduced the Phonetic Alphabet, giving a practical application exercise.
