This unit gives an overview of receptive skills—reading and listening—and how one might create lesson plans to effectively target both. There are a variety of purposes for reading and listening that are important to take note of when encouraging the development of these skills. I appreciate this unit because I really believe in emphasizing all language skills equally. Growing up learning multiple languages, I definitely had experiences where I preferred to focus on my stronger skills while not wanting to acknowledge my weaknesses. This is something I would like to work on as a teacher when teaching students—that is, helping students recognize that having weaknesses are a part of the learning process and not something to be ignored. The example lesson plan at the end is helpful in starting to think about designing my own lesson.
