This unit covered phonology and pronunciation. This is a difficult topic in English because even native speakers do not pronounce words the same depending on where they are from. This goes for phonetics as well as which parts of words are stressed. Intonation also changes based on location. Accents make this more complicated and can be difficult to teach. The phonemic symbols appear to be a useful tool to help overcome issues with pronunciation, although I am not extremely familiar with them. I will have to practice their usage to be more comfortable in case they are needed in class.I feel conflicted over the stance teachers are expected to take in progress tests - whether through formal testing or by observation. While I feel that observation is a useful tool for measuring student progress and helping to craft lessons more towards their needs, formal tests serve as more than just a memory assessment. Less vocal or more analogue students have their chance to confidently and privately display their skills through formal tests. As a teacher, I plan to use a properly spaced amount of formal tests in the curriculum to help assess both my vocal and more shy students.
