Unit 12 focuses on teaching the skills required to produce a new language. The skills of language production are speaking and writing. Speaking lessons are divided into accuracy and fluency exercises. Accuracy lessons usually consist of some form of drilling or prompted classroom response. These lessons are in nature more rigid and require the students to focus on how to correctly produce the language. Opposite to accuracy, there are fluency based lessons that allow students to be more active and creative with their new abilities. When teaching students to write instead of speak there are several factors to their eventual success. The teacher must direct the students in handwriting, spelling, and punctuation. Each of these topics will when practiced poorly imply that the student may not have received an adequate education.
