Unit 7 covered the topic of teaching new language, specifically vocabulary, grammar, and functions. The four things students always need in order to learn these elements are: - to be exposed to it, - to understand its meaning, - to understand how it's constructed, and - to be able to practice and produce it. ESA techniques are used to teach new language and specific examples were provided for each of the Engage, Study, and Activate phases. The Straight Arrow approach is used for vocabulary and grammatical structure lessons and the Boomerang approach is used for teaching language functions. This Unit also covered the criteria used when determining which vocabulary should be included in a lesson (beyond what is included in any course requirements and teaching materials provided). This criteria includes appropriateness to the students, appropriateness to the task, likelihood of students encountering the words (frequency and coverage), and teachability of the new words.
