In this unit, we learned the certain importance materials bring into a class. For example, a teacher can use worksheets, videos, dictionary, coursebooks or visual aids. Materials are usually divided into two sections which are authentic or creative. Authentic material is defined as material that was created outside the classroom setting; for example, newspapers, brochures, magazine or menus. Creative material is material that is designed just for the use of a class such as flash cards, crossword or roleplay cards. It is good to remember that it is important to have a balance between both types of material during a lesson. Another topic discussed in this unit was the disadvantage of the coursebooks which I found it to be interesting because course books are usually good for guidance or inexperienced teachers. Some of the disadvantages are as fallowing: it can be boring if used all the time for the entire course, it can dictate what is taught, it can not be suitable for the class or meet the student needs, and it can not peak the interest or liking of teacher and students. It essential to remember that a coursebook should not dictate what is being taught in class instead it should be the teacher who should lead, modify and dictate what is being taught. The teacher should use the course book as a reference, guidance, continuity, or for material that is already graded.
