Conditionals are sentences containing \"if\" or \"when\". They refer to possibilities, whether the past, present or future. There are two types of clauses - the \"if\" clause and the main clause. Combining these together creates one of the five main conditional sentences - zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional or mixed conditional. Each level builds a little uncertainty on top of the previous one. The mixed conditional, however, can be thought of as a hybrid between the second and third conditional. When speaking about what someone had said in the past, we are able to make use of reported and direct speech. Both have their set rules, but the main difference is that reported speech is closest to the direct translation as possible while reported speech mentions the past.
