If you consider English language like an ensemble of rules that you can use according to the tense (in this case past tenses) and learn how to code and to decode them by following the basic grammar rules, you will be fine. That's what I tend to show to my students; most of the times by learning a couple of grammar structures (sometimes by heart) you can work with the entire language and be successful on doing so. The thing learners struggle the most is when memorizing the verbs, both regular and irregular. By the way, this week I'm planning a \"verbs fishing game\" looking forward making that task a bit more fun and therefore significant.
