This unit highlights the use of course books and lesson materials. Lesson materials can be split into two groups ? authentic materials and created materials. Anything a native speaker would potentially read or listen to is an authentic material. Created materials are supplementary materials made by the teacher, and can be graded to the level of the students. Course books usually come with everything needed to teach the course. This includes a student?s book, workbook, cassettes, teacher?s book and videos. While it has been tried and tested, there are cases where the book is intended to teach the general public and not students of a specific nationality. From this unit, I learned that resorting to a course book for the entirety of the course is not ideal. It would be better to incorporate created and authentic materials into the class. This is in order to ensure that the students will remain motivated.
