This unit discusses the past tense in its four forms. The four forms are past simple (PS), past continuous (PC), past perfect (PP) and past perfect continuous (PPC). The past simple (subject + past simple form of verb) has to do with actions that were completed at a definite time in the past. The past continuous (was/were + verb+ing) refers to actions that began in the past and are still going on at the time of speaking. The past perfect tense (had + past participle) is for actions that started before other actions in the past. The past perfect continuous (had + been + verb+ing) refers to actions that were going on in the past up until the past moment mentioned in the sentence.
