This unit is about teaching vocabulary, grammar and functions using the ESA approach. It is about encouraging students to learn by getting verbally involved (Engage) ? first, by discussing a variety of simple subjects familiar to the students, as well as asking and answering questions. The second step involves teacher preparation of activities, games, exercises and more for learning purposes (Study), whereas in the Engage stage the teacher is more passive. The third step (Activate) encourages the students to actively participate in group or pair discussions, role-playing and debates, for instance, which involve more communication on the part of the students than the first two phases.
