Unit 13 covered the physical properties of the sounds we create when speaking the English language. When communicating the intonations we use helps carry a message along with words being said. The intonations express emotions or feelings. The rise/fall patterns can trigger the response or pause when communicating. The stress of a word in a sentence also signals the main emphasis of the sentence. Also covered well were the stress rules for words with different numbers of syllables. The use of the dictionary is helpful in the fact that it shows vocabulary words in the phonemic alphabet as well as the traditional spelling.
