In Unit 11, methods for teaching receptive skills was introduced. Receptive skills in language learning is Reading and Listening, which are just as important as Production skills of Speaking and Writing. Reading and Listening can be for a purpose or for entertainment, or both motives combined. While reading or listening a number of specialist skills are used: Predictive; Scanning (for specific information); Skimming (for general information); Detailed (read/listen in full detail); and Deduction (unwritten/unspoken information). To make teaching receptive skills effective, a teacher could minimise problems by pre-teaching problematic vocabularies; select appropriate texts; create/maintain interest; and using comprehension tasks for understanding. Common problems for learners are sentence length, vocabulary length, and the number of unfamiliar vocabularies.
