Unit 9 discusses the differences between authentic materials, and created materials. Authentic materials generally refer to articles of daily use, such as Menus, Newspapers, and Posters. Created materials refer to materials created for the purpose of education or leisure, such as crossword puzzles, course books, or prompt cards.
It is highlighted in the unit that authentic materials can be rather difficult for beginners to understand, and created materials should be used instead. This is to be highlighted as sometimes, it is difficult for native speakers to realise how difficult it could be for another person to learn the language that we are so familiar with.
